UKEPA ‘Laid In Britain’ Assurance Scheme receives FSA approval

An endorsed alternative to The Lion Code

The Laid In Britain Code of Practice, managed by The United Kingdom Egg Producers Association has just received full endorsement and recognition from the Foods Standard Agency (FSA)1.

With immediate effect this means that eggs produced under the Laid in Britain egg assurance scheme are deemed to be safe to be eaten by infants, children, pregnant women and elderly people, either raw or lightly cooked or within foods containing them.

Laid In Britain, is a UK egg-specific food safety and welfare assurance scheme, that is governed by stringent rules that adhere to the principles, requirements and recommendations laid out in the Food Standards Agency. It is specifically aimed at independent egg producers/retailers, who supply both regionally and locally. It is designed to ensure high standards of food safety, provide quality assurance and minimise the risk of Salmonella infection in people via contaminated eggs.  It offers egg producers a viable alternative to The Lion Code, providing reassurance to customers, such as retail and catering outlets, as to the quality and safety of their eggs.

The eggs produced within the Laid in Britain scheme have a superior history of freedom from Salmonella than found in other codes of practice.

Following the FSA approval Chairman of UKEPA, Adam Stratton said “Laid In Britain Eggs have always been safe to eat in any form. We have worked hard to ensure that our updated Code of Practice satisfies the FSA’s new safety standards for eggs with a very low risk of salmonella. It is gratifying to have this formally recognised by the FSA and we hope that the general public, retailers and our growing membership will continue to put their trust in the scheme”.

Note To Editors

The Laid In Britain scheme run by UKEPA offers an alternative to the Lion Scheme (which operated by the British Egg Industry Council). The Laid In Britain scheme is approved and authorised by the FSA and is unique in that, in addition to vaccinating all hens against Salmonella Enteritidis and Salmonella Typhimurium, it also utilises a highly effective system called “competitive exclusion”. This is used as an additional method of disease control.

Ongoing monitoring from accredited members consistently proves compliance and excellent performance among their flocks.
